A Short history of Tibetan Carpet Making in Nepal
The social upheaval that began in Tibet in 1959 created an exodus of the families to Nepal.
These people who formerly organized the weaving of Tibetan carpets were now able to share their expertise and knowledge with the people of Nepal.
A revival of the Tibetan rug industry began in the 1970's with an influx of foreign tourism and the beginning of the export market to western countries.
The designs and patterns were recorded and documented and then over the ensuing years Nepalese cultural influences the designs were added.
Motifs such as dragons, phoenix, clouds, lotus, and mandalas for the core of the Tibetan carpet design repertoire.
The western influences also created a market for modern, abstract and Persian designs.
This began a carpet industry that is important to the Nepalese economy even to this day.
The art of Tibetan rug weaving began for both domestic and religious purposes.
